Elephant & Castle Station Capacity Upgrade

Elephant & Castle, London, UK · 2022–2027 (Stage 1 construction of new station box started Jan 2022, tunnelling expected to begin 2025 and complete by 2027) · c.£185m (estimated final cost as of June 2024, some sources cite £150M unconfirmed)

The judgement call

Account-gated at launch

* Project is essential to meet projected 25-40% increase in demand by 2041. * Will provide step-free access to the Northern line for the first time. * Designed to enable Bakerloo and Northern line access from the same entrance for the first time. * Integration with the Elephant & Castle shopping centre’s redevelopment.

Key engineering challenges

* Technically complex SCL tunnelling, including squareworks techniques. * Interfaces with sensitive existing London Underground assets, live utilities, and new station box in very close proximity. * Detailed finite element modelling to represent staged construction sequence and validate design assumptions. * Comprehensive instrumentation & monitoring regime to manage ground movement and safeguard neighbouring assets. * Temporary works measures (pipe-roof canopy, targeted ground improvement, carefully sequenced excavation) to mitigate ground risk.
