Ebbsfleet International Station Works
Ebbsfleet Valley, Kent, UK · 2002–2006 (construction); opened 2007 (international services), 2009 (domestic services) · £180m (station cost); part of the £5.2bn Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) Section 2 project.
The judgement call
Account-gated at launch* Chosen over other potential sites due to its less remote location and potential for stimulating development in the Thames Gateway. * Designed as a primary park-and-ride facility, leveraging its proximity to major motorways (M25, M2, A2). * The station's design aimed to be similar to Stratford International, focusing on a modern, accessible hub. * Eurostar services were suspended from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting vulnerability to external factors.
Key engineering challenges
* Constructing a major high-speed rail station on a brownfield site, integrating it with the High Speed 1 line and existing North Kent Line. * Managing complex ground conditions, including the disposal of flue dust and importing Thanet Sand to stabilise an exhausted chalk pit. * Designing a large, light-filled bridge structure of steel and glass to span across six platforms. * Coordinating the station's opening with the wider Channel Tunnel Rail Link project and the transfer of equipment from Waterloo International.
