Derby Station Remodelling (Derby Resignalling Project)

Derby, UK · 2018 (79-day partial closure, completed October 2018) · £200m

The judgement call

Account-gated at launch

* The project was a "once in a generation" opportunity to upgrade infrastructure. * Simplified track layout and segregated services (London services on east side, NE-SW on west side) to improve efficiency. * Close cooperation between Network Rail and contractors (hub and spoke model, co-location) was critical to success. * The project aimed to deliver a layout ready for future electrification.

Key engineering challenges

* Remodelling a complex track layout at a major operational station to reduce congestion and enable faster, more reliable journeys. * Executing a 79-day continuous partial closure, the longest ever, requiring meticulous planning and coordination. * Replacing life-expired signalling and track infrastructure. * Maintaining train services through complex bus substitutions during the closure.
