Bond Street Station Upgrade

Bond Street, London, UK · 2013–2022 (main upgrade 2013-2016, Elizabeth Line station opened 2022) · £150 million (for LU upgrade, Elizabeth Line integration part of overall Crossrail cost)

The judgement call

Account-gated at launch

* Use of fibre reinforced sprayed concrete for primary and secondary linings in SCL tunnels. * Innovative temporary SCL design in lieu of square works. * The project faced extensive complications during excavation and construction, leading to delays in the Elizabeth Line station opening. * Integration with the Elizabeth Line significantly increased station capacity and connectivity.

Key engineering challenges

* Construction in very close proximity to existing operational London Underground structures (Jubilee and Central Lines). * Complex civil engineering challenges due to the station's location in one of the oldest parts of London with criss-crossing subterranean infrastructure and incomplete historical records. * Designing and constructing SCL tunnels and access shafts, including over-bridge tunnels cutting through existing platform tunnels. * Managing construction in a highly congested urban environment.
